Summary of Chapter 8: Robert plans a road trip with Chloe to the southern mountains and an ancient and mystical cave carving—Indalo Man, the Rainbow Man. Robert senses this trip could be the beginning of something he doesn’t fully understand.
It was mid-afternoon and Debbie had taken a late lunch. She sat on the bench at the small picnic table in the park near her office with a deli sandwich and an iced tea from the shop in the strip mall up the road. She had made a couple of phone calls over the last two days. One never connected. Another did, but Robert had not answered. She left a voice message, but she assumed her father probably wouldn’t know how to retrieve it. It frustrated her but she was over it. It was the trip of a lifetime, she now reminded herself. Dad had been okay when we talked. She was also better about the companion. Maybe it’s all right. Maybe it’s good. Maybe, if she’s a decent person, she’s keeping an eye on him. Still, Debbie was Robert’s daughter, and he was her father.
She dialed. After a few fast rings, Robert answered.
