Summary of Chapter 22: Inside the quiet room in Zujaira, Chloe prepares for her fate.
While his father was alive, Robert had been to the hunting cabin only once. It was a rundown place built out of timber with room for two twin beds, a small sink and a wood burning stove. A fireplace kept it warm. His father would steal away there with a buddy or two during deer season. Robert remembered how his father would smell when he returned from the Allegheny Mountains—wood smoke, cigars, and sweat. When Robert turned 12 years old, he and his father drove to the cabin together. It was out of season for deer, and that was by design. The trip was solely to show Robert how to handle a rifle.
