Summary of Chapter 20: Chloe and Robert, each in their own way, prepare for what Chloe is about to do.
It was the heat of the day, and few sat in the plaza. An older woman read a book under the shade of a canopy. A husband and wife from Germany, Robert guessed from the accent, drank sangria. And on his other side, two tables away, a young woman, a local, he presumed, smoked cigarettes, and drank white wine. Robert sat closest to the steps of the old church, under a large umbrella, across the table from an empty chair.
Chloe had not yet arrived.
It was where they had met, in this plaza, at Bar Lara. Maybe that’s why she chose it, or maybe it was simply familiar. She was at home here in this plaza high above Granada. Chloe wanted a public place, somewhere out in the open, and this was that place. Fewer chances to get emotional, she had said.
